From Beginner to Intermediate: Level Up Your Game
Badminton is an easy sport to pick up, but an extremely difficult sport to master. You can easily grab some rackets and a shuttlecock and play with your friends casually. However, if you want to take your game to the next level, there are some basics that you must learn and master! In this post, we will be covering the most basic beginner training methods of badminton to help you take improve your badminton game.
Grip & Form
It's easy for most people to simply hit the shuttle over the net — all you need to do is contact the shuttle with your racket strings! If you want to improve the quality and consistency of your shots, however, you will need to make sure that your grip is proper and your form is consistent.
Without a proper grip and form for each of your shots, you won't be able to hit the same quality shots with each stroke! Check out this video to learn more about the basic grips of badminton and when to use them.
Footwork
If we can't get to the shot, we won't be able to hit the shot! Footwork is also crucial for all beginner badminton players to improve their skill level. Mastering basic footwork allows us to be more efficient with our steps on the court, generate the most fluid and powerful shots at each location on the court, and help us move even quicker.
Footwork takes practice and requires you to do it over and over to truly nail down the muscle memory. To start, mastering the footwork to the 4 corners of the court is a good way to start improving your movement.
Basic Shots
The last thing beginners must know and improve on is their basic shots of badminton. The drive, clear, drop, and smash are the 4 basic shots that all beginners must know. Again, you can simply keep hitting the bird over the net and have a good time playing badminton, but if you are serious about improving your skill level, you will need to learn these basic shots and know when to play them to win the game!
Each basic shot requires a different sort of skill set and requires a lot of practice to improve. Take your time and be patient with yourself, it may be best to take them one at a time before you move on to the next one. This video is a great example of all the basic shots and how to work on them.
Dedicate Yourself to Practice
If you are serious about taking your game to the next level, make sure you dedicate time to practice! It's always fun to jump straight into a game with your friends, but if you really spend more time mastering your grip and form, footwork, and your basic shots, you will see that your gameplay and skill improves much quicker.
